წმიდა სამოელ კათოლიკოსი საქართველოს ეკლესიის საჭეთმპყრობლის ტახტზე აღსაყდრდა წმიდა პეტრე კათოლიკოსის შემდეგ VI ს დასაწყისში. წმიდა სამოელი ისევე, როგორც წმიდა პეტრე კათოლიკოსი წარმოშობით ბიზანტიიდან იყო. წმიდა სამოელი საქართველში ჩამოვიდა ვახტანგ მეფის სურვილით, კონსტანტინეპოლის პატრიარქის ლოცვა-კურთხევისა და ანტიოქიის პატრიარქის მიერ ეპისკოპოსად კურთხევის შემდეგ. წმიდა სამოელი სხვა ეპისკოპოსებთან ერთად თან ჩამოჰყვა ქართლში კათოლიკოსად დადგინებულ წმიდა პეტრეს. ამ დროს კათოლიკოსის კათედრა და რეზიდენცია იყო „ეკლესია მოციქულთა სუეტი ცხოველი“ წმიდა პეტრე კი მცხეთასვე განაწესეს ეპისკოპოსად.
