ღირსი ნიკოლოზ მონაზონი მხედართმთავრად მსახურობდა ბიზანტიის იმპერატორის, ნიკიფორე I-ის (802-811) ზეობისას. იგი ბულგარელებთან ომში გაგზავნეს. ბრძოლის წინა დღეს ერთი ქალი წმიდანის ცთუნებას ეცადა, მაგრამ უფლის რჩეული ახოვნად წინ აღუდგა მას. სისხლისმღვრელ ბრძოლაში ნიკოლოზის ყველა თანამებრძოლი დაიღუპა და მხოლოდ ის გადარჩა. მხედარს ზეციური ჩვენებით განეცხადა, რომ სიცოცხლე საცთურის დაძლევისათვის ებოძა. ამის შემდეგ მან მონასტერს მიაშურა, სქიმა შეიმოსა და დაუდუმებლად ლოცულობდა ომებში დაღუპული მეომრებისათვის. დაუცხრომელი ღვაწლით ნეტარი სათნოეყო უფალს და განჭვრეტის ნიჭი მოიგო.
