ღირსმოწამე პაფნუტი ეგვიპტელი იყო და უდაბნოში მოსაგრეობდა. დიოკლეტიანეს (284-305) მიერ ქრისტიანთა დევნისას მმართველმა არიანემ ბრძანა, განდეგილი მისთვის მიეგვარათ, მაგრამ პაფნუტი არ დაელოდა წარმოგზავნილებს და თვითონ გამოცხადდა ხელისუფალთან. აქ ნეტარმა აშკარად აღიარა ქრისტე, რისთვისაც საწამებლად გადასცეს. მეომრებმა, დიონისემ და კალემაქემ, რომლებიც აწამებდნენ წმიდანს, იხილეს, თუ როგორ იცავდა მას ღვთის ძალა და ირწმუნეს ქრისტე მაცხოვარი. მმართველის ბრძანებით წმინდანები მაშინვე სიკვდილით დასაჯეს.
