წმიდა დიდმოწამე ათანასე (III-IV სს.) წმიდა მოწამეების, სერგისა და ბაქოსის (ხს. 7 ოქტომბერს) მეგობარი იყო. ქრისტიანთა მდევნელი იმპერატორის, მაქსიმიანეს (284-305; 307-310) დროს იგი ეპარქის თანამდებობაზე დანიშნეს და ეგვიპტეში გაამწესეს, სადაც მალე ქრისტიანული სარწმუნოების აღიარებისათვის სამსჯავროს გადასცეს. იმ იმედით, რომ წმიდა ათანასე „გონს მოვიდოდა“, მმართველმა კლისმაში (წითელ ზღვაზე) გაგზავნა იგი და ქრისტიანული ტაძრების დახურვა უბრძანა. დანიშნულების ადგილზე ჩასულმა უფლის რჩეულმა კი ტაძარში დიდი ზეიმით აღნიშნა ქრისტეშობის ბრწყინვალე დღესასწაული. როცა მომხდარი მმართველმა გაიგო, ბრძანა თავი მოეკვეთათ წმინდანისათვის.
