ღირსი მაკედონი - ასურელი მეუდაბნოე (IV-V) თავდაპირველად მწირის ცხოვრებით ცხოვრობდა. 25 წლის მანძილზე ფინიკიის, კილიკიის და სირიის მთებში მოგზაურობდა. შემდეგ წმიდანმა სირიის უდაბნოებში ერთი ღრმა თხრილი ამოარჩია სამკვიდრებლად და აქ, ღია ცის ქვეშ ატარებდა დღეებს ამქვეყნიურ დიდებასა და პატივს განრიდებული. ღირს მაკედონთან მრავალი ადამიანი მოდიოდა სულიერი დამოძღვრის მოსასმენად. სიბერის წლებში მოისმინა მეუდაბნოემ შეისმინა მათი ვედრება და ვიწრო კელიაში გადავიდა. მთელი ცხოვრების მანძილზე წმიდა მამა დანაყული და წყალში დამბალი ქერით იკვებებოდა (მიტომაც უწოდეს „კრიტოფაგი“ - ქერისმჭამელი), მხოლოდ სიცოცხლის მიმწუხრზე დაიწყო ცოტაოდენი პურის მიღება, მკაცრი მოღვაწეობით ხორციელად მოუძლურებულმა.
