ღირსი ათანასე აღმსარებელი მდიდარ და კეთილმსახურ კონსტანტინეპოლელთა ოჯახში დაიბადა. ის ბავშვობიდანვე ოცნებობდა, უფლისთვის მიეძღვნა თავი და როცა სრულწლოვანებას მიაღწია, ნიკომიდიაში მოციქულთა თავთა სახელობის მონასტერს მიაშურა. მისი კეთილმსახური ცხოვრების ამბავი სამეფო კარზეც შეიტყვეს. ხატმბრძოლი იმპერატორის, ლეონ სომეხის (813-820) ზეობისას მართლმადიდებლობის ერთგული დამცველი სასტიკად აწამეს, დევნეს და შეავიწროვეს. ნეტარი ათანასე მშვიდობით მიიცვალა 821 წელს.
