წმიდა ათანასე I, კონსტანტინოპოლელი პატრიარქი (1289-1293; 1303-1311), ერისკაცობაში - ალექსი, საბერძნეთის ქალაქ ადრიანოპოლიდან იყო. ჯერ კიდევ სიყმაწვილეში, ქრისტიანული სიბრძნის შემეცნებაში წარმატებულმა, დატოვა მშობლიური სახლი, თესალონიკს მიაშურა და ერთ-ერთ მონასტერში აკაკის სახელით ბერად აღიკვეცა. აქედან წმიდანი მალე ათონის წმიდა მთაზე გადავიდა და ესთიგმენის სავანის ძმობაში შევიდა, სადაც სამი წლის მანძილზე გულმოდგინედ აღასრულებდა მეტრაპეზის მოვალეობას. გამუდმებული შრომითა და თავისი სათნოებებით ნეტარმა საყოველთაო კეთილგანწყობა დაიმსახურა.
