წმიდა ანტონი, კონსტანტინეპოლელი პატრიარქი აზიელი იყო, მაგრამ მთელი ცხოვრება სიყრმიდან მიცვალებამდე კონსტანტინეპოლში გაატარა. იგი დაახლოებით 829 წელს დაიბადა მდიდარი და კეთილმსახური ქრისტიანების ოჯახში. დედის გარდაცვალების შემდეგ 12 წლის ყრმამ მონასტერს მიაშურა, სადაც წინამძღვრის მიბაძვით, ღამეებს ათევდა ლოცვაში და მკაცრი, ასკეტური ცხოვრებით ცხოვრობდა. გარკვეული დროის შემდეგ იგი, საკუთარი ნების წინააღმდეგ, მღვდლად აკურთხეს და წინამძღვარადაც დაადგინეს. ამ ხარისხში მან ბერად აღკვეცა საკუთარი მამა. წმიდა ანტონი გულმოწყალებით გამოირჩეოდა, უყვარდა გლახაკები და გულუხვად განიკითხავდა მათ.
