ღირსი თეოფილე აღმსარებელი ბულგარელი იყო. იგი ქალაქ ტიბერიოპოლის (შემდგომ - სტრუნიცა, მაკედონიაში) მიდამოებში დაიბადა. ნეტარმა ცამეტი წლის ასაკში ფარულად დატოვა სახლი და სელენტიის მთაზე მდებარე ლავრას მიაშურა. სამი წლის შემდეგ იგი ბერად აღკვეცეს. როცა წმიდანის მშობლებმა შვილის ადგილსამყოფელი შეიტყვეს, სავანეში მივიდნენ და იღუმენს თხოვეს, თეოფილე რამდენიმე ძმასთან ერთად ტიბერიოპოლში გაეშვა, მშობლიური სახლის სიახლოვეს მონასტრის დასაარსებლად. იღუმენმა ღვთის ნების გასაგებად მონასტერში მკაცრი მარხვა და გაძლიერებული ლოცვა ბრძანა. მესამე დღეს ტაძარში გაისმა ხმა, რომელიც წინამძღვარს თეოფილეს გაშვებაზე აძლევდა კურთხევას, რადგან იგი ახალ სავანეში უნდა გაბრწყინებულიყო დიდი სულიერი ღვაწლით.
