წმიდა სტეფანე შალიანოვიჩი სერბეთის ქალაქ ჟუპაში დაიბადა კეთილმსახურ ქრისტიანთა ოჯახში. იმ ხანებში სერბებს ხშირად ესხმოდნენ თავს თურქები, რომლებიც აოხრებდნენ ქვეყანას. წმიდანი მხედრად მსახურობდა ლაშქარში და მხნედ იცავდა სამშობლოს. როცა ქვეყანაში შიმშილობა დაიწყო, გულმოწყალე მეომარი თავის ულუფას დამშეულებს აძლევდა. ქველისსაქმე, სიწმიდე, ლოცვა, მართლმადიდებლური სარწმუნოება და მოყვასის გულწრფელი სიყვარული განუყოფელი იყო მისგან. ნეტარი 1515 წლის 4 ოქტომბერს გავიდა ამსოფლიდან. რამდენიმე ხნის შემდეგ თურქებმა მის საფლავზე ნათელი შენიშნეს. მათ იფიქრეს, რომ აქ განძი იყო დაფლული, სამარე გათხარეს და სტეფანეს უხრწნელი სხეული იპოვეს. სერბმა მონაზვნებმა ფაშასგან გამოისყიდეს წმიდანის ცხედარი და ფრუშტის მთაზე მდებარე შიშატოვეცის სავანეში გადაასვენეს.
