ღირსი პავლე, ცხოვრობდა და მოღვაწეობდა IV საუკუნეში. იგი უკვე მხცოვანი იყო, როცა ანტონი დიდს (ხს. 17 იანვარს) დაემოწაფა. დაუცხრომელი ღვაწლისთვის განჭვრეტისა და სულიერ სენთა კურნების ნიჭით დაჯილდოებული მამა, რომელსაც თავისი წმიდა მოძღვარი ხან ელია წინასწარმეტყველს ადარებდა, ხან - იოანე ნათლისმცემელს და ხანაც - პავლე მოციქულს, საოცარი სიმდაბლითაც გამოირჩეოდა, ამიტომ „უბრალო“ შეარქვეს. ანტონი დიდი მასზე ამბობდა: „სარწმუნოებაში წარმატებულუბს მხოლოდ მცირე ეშმაკთა განსხმა ძალუძთ, თავმდაბლებს კი, როგორიც პავლე უბრალოა, თავად დემონთა მეუფებაზე აქვთ ხელმწიფება“.
