მღვდელმოწამე ვლასი, სებასტიელი ეპისკოპოსი მართალი და კეთილმსახური ცხოვრების გამო საყოველთაო სიყვარულით სარგებლობდა, ამიტომაც ქალაქ სებასტიის მაცხოვრებლებმა იგი ერთსულოვნად აირჩიეს თავიანთ ეპისკოპოსად. წმიდა მღვდელმთავრის მოღვაწეობის ხანა ქრისტიანთა სასტიკი მდევნელების, დიოკლეტიანეს (284-305) და ლიკინიუსის (307-324) მეფობის წლებს დაემთხვა. იგი განამტკიცებდა თავის სამწყსოს, საპყრობილეებში აკითხავდა ტუსაღებს, ამხნევებდა მარტვილებს.
