წმიდა ბარსისე და ევლოგი - ედესელი ეპისკოპოსები და პროტოგენი, კარიელი ეპისკოპოსი, აღმსარებელნი IV საუკუნის მეორე ნახევარში აღესრულნენ. იმპერატორმა ვალენტიმ (364-378), რომელიც არიანული ერესის გავრცელებას ესწრაფოდა, მართლმადიდებელთა სასტიკი დევნა დაიწყო. ქალაქ ედესაში მან კათედრიდან განდევნა სარწმუნოების სიწმიდისათვის მებრძოლი მღვდელმთავარი ბარსისე და კუნძულ არადის საპყრობილეში გაგზავნა. მართლმადიდებელი მოსახლეობა დევნილ მღვდელმთავარს დიდი პატივით შეხვდა. იგი უფრო შორს, ეგვიპტის ქალაქ ოქსირინთში გადაიყვანეს, მაგრამ იქაც ამგვარადვე დაუხვდნენ. მაშინ მღვდელმთავარი იმპერიის საზღვარზე, ქალაქ ფენონში გადაასახლეს, სადაც, გატანჯულმა, სული უფალს შეჰვედრა (+378).
