წინასწარმეტყველი სამოელი - ისრაელის მეთხუთმეტე და უკანასკნელი მსაჯული - ქრისტეს შობამდე ათასასორმოცდა-ექვს წელზე მეტი ხნის წინ ცხოვრობდა. იგი ლევიტელთა ტომიდან იყო. მისი დედა - ანა დიდხანს იტანჯებოდა უშვილობის გამო. ბოლოს უფალმა შეისმინა თავისი მხევლის მხურვალე ვედრება და უბოძა ძე, რომელსაც სამოელი - „გამოთხოვილი“ დაარქვეს. როცა ყმაწვილს სამი წელი შეუსრულდა, მშობლებმა იგი სელომში წაიყვანეს და მღვდელმთავარ ელის მიაბარეს, რომელიც, იმავდროულად, ისრაელთა მსაჯულიც იყო. „და ყრმაჲ იგი სამოელ იყო მსახურ წინაშე უფლისა ელი მღდელისა თანა“ (I მეფ. 2.11). თორმეტი წლის ასაკში მას ზეგარდამო ეუწყა, რომ ღმერთი მღვდელმთავრის მთელი სახლეულობის დასჯას აპირებდა „სიცრუვისათჳს ძეთა მისთაჲსა, რამეთუ ძჳრსა იტყოდეს ღმრთისათჳს, და არა ასწავლიდა მათ“ (I მეფ. 3.13).
