წმიდა მოწამე ასკალონი დაიბადა დიდ ერმოპოლში (შუა ეგვიპტე). წმიდანი ეწამა დიოკლეტიანეს მიერ ქრისტიანთა დევნისას. მთავარ არიანესთან მიყვანილმა ასკალონმა თამამად აღიარა თავისი სარწმუნოება და უარი განაცხადა წარმართული ღმერთების მსახურებაზე. წმიდანმა არიანეს უწინასწარმეტყველა, რომ მოვიდოდა დრო და თვითონაც აღიარებდა იესო ქრისტეს ერთადერთ ჭეშმარიტ ღმერთად. არიანეს ბრძანებით ასკალონი სასტიკად აწამეს, ბოძზე დაკიდეს და ბასრი იარაღით დასერეს. მან მდუმარედ დაითმინა ტკივილები. ერთ-ერთი მეომარი მოწამესთან მივიდა და თქვა: „შეხედეთ, მან გრძნობა დაკარგა და სიკვდილის პირასაა მისული“. წმიდანმა უპასუხა: „მე გრძნობა არ დამიკარგავს, მოუკლებლად ვადიდებ შემოქმედ ღმერთს“.
