წმიდა იოანე გუთელი ეპისკოპოსი (VIII) სიყრმეშივე აღიკვეცა ბერად. ღირსმა მამამ იერუსალიმის წმიდა ადგილები მოილოცა და სამი წლის შემდეგ დაბრუნდა სამშობლოში. ამასობაში ხატმბრძოლ იმპერატორს კონსტანტინე კოპრონიმს (741-775) განედევნა გუთელი ეპისკოპოსი. ქრისტიანები შეევედრნენ წმიდა იოანეს, შესდგომოდა მღვდელმთავრის მძიმე უღელს. წმიდა მამა მწვალებლობისაგან დაცულ საქართველოში გამოემგზავრა. აქ დაასხეს მას ხელი ეპისკოპოსად. გუთეთს დაბრუნებული მღვდელმთავარი მალე იძულებული შეიქმნა დაეტოვებინა სამწყსო, ხაზართა დევნას გაერიდა და 4 წელი გაატარა ამასტრიდაში. წმიდა იოანემ 40 დღით ადრე იწინასწარმეტყველა საკუთარი სიკვდილი, გარდაიცვალა 790 წელს და დაკრძალეს პართენიტის მონასტერში.
