წმიდა მოსე, ნოვგოროდელი მთავარეპისკოპოსი (ერობაში - მიტროფანე) 1325 წელს აღსაყდრდა მღვდელმთავრის ტახტზე, მაგრამ ურთიერთქიშპობამ, შფოთმა და სხვა უბედურებებმა დაამძიმეს მისი სული და 1390 წელს ნებით გადადგა ეპისკოპოსობიდან. წმიდანმა ოცზე მეტი წელი გაატარა მონაზვნურ ღვაწლში, 1352 წელს კი სამწყსოს დაჟინებული მოთხოვნით კვლავ დაუბრუნდა თავის კათედრას. წმიდა მოსე ჭეშმარიტ მწყემსად მიევლინა ეპარქიას: ჩაგრულებს მფარველობდა, ღარიბ ქვრივებს შეეწეოდა, რჩევა-დარიგებით განამტკიცებდა კეთილმსახურებს; მან თავი მოუყარა მწერლებს და თავისი ხარჯებით მრავალი წიგნი გადააწერინა, ბევრი ტაძარი ააგო ნოვგოროდსა და მის შემოგარენში.
