ღირსი იოანე გლახაკი (მეტალავრე) კონსტანტინეპოლში ცხოვრობდა V საუკუნეში. მდიდარმა და დიდებულმა მშობლებმა მას კარგი განათლება მიაღებინეს. ყმაწვილი ბევრს კითხულობდა, განსაკუთრებით საღვთო წიგნები იზიდავდა. მან სცნო ამ სოფლის ამაოება და გადაწყვიტა, უფლის მსახურებისთვის გადაედო თავი. წმიდანმა მშობლებს სთხოვა, სახარება მაჩუქეთო, შემდეგ კი ფარულად დატოვა სახლი, თებაიდის უდაბნოს მიაშურა და აქ მღვიძარეთა მონასტერში ბერად აღიკვეცა. ახალგაზრდა მოწესე გულმოდგინედ შეუდგა მსახურებას, ის აოცებდა საძმოს მუდმივი ლოცვით, უდრტვინველი მორჩილებით, მკაცრი თავშეკავებითა და მოთმინებით.
