ღირსი მაქსიმე ბერძენი (XV-XVI), მდიდარი და წარჩინებული ბერძენის ვაჟი, ალბანეთის ქალაქ არტში დაიბადა. სიყმაწვილეში მან ბევრი იმოგზაურა, ბევრ ენას დაეუფლა, მრავალ მეცნიერებას გაეცნო, ბოლოს კი ათონის მთას მიაშურა და ვათოპედის სავანეში ბერად აღიკვეცა. ამ დროს მოსკოვის დიდმა მთავარმა ვასილ ივანეს ძემ (1505-15330) ისურვა, თავისი დედის, სოფია პალეოლოგის ბერძნულ ხელნაწერებსა და წიგნებში გარკვეულიყო და კონსტანტინეპოლის პატრიარქს მიმართა თხოვნით, მისთვის სწავლული ბერძენი გამოეგზავნა. პატრიარქმა ასეთად ბერი მაქსიმე ჩათვალა. მოსკოვში ჩასულ წმიდანს დაევალა, სლავურად ეთარგმნა ფსალმუნებისა და საქმე მოციქულთას განმარტება, აგრეთვე რამდენიმე საღვთისმსახურო წიგნი.
