წმიდა პოლიევქტო იმპერატორ დეკიუსის (249-251) ლაშქარში მსახურობდა, ქრისტესთვის კი ვალერიანს (253-259) ზეობისას ივნო. წმიდანი მტკიცე ქრისტიან, მხედარ ნეარქთან მეგობრობდა, ღვთისმოშიშებითაც გამოირჩეოდა, მაგრამ მაინც წარმართად რჩებოდა. როცა ქრისტიანების დევნა დაიწყო, ნეარქმა პოლიევქტოს უთხრა: „ძმაო, ჩვენ მალე გავიყრებით: მე ქრისტესთვის საწამებლად წამიყვანენ, შენ კი, გთხოვ, უარი თქვა ჩემს მოყვრობაზე.” წმიდანმა პასუხად მიუგო, რომ ძილში იხილა ქრისტე, რომელმაც ახალი, ბრწყინვალე სამოსით შემოსა იგი. „ამ წუთიდან, - თქვა მან, - მე მზად ვარ ქრისტეს სამსახურისათვის.”
