ღირსმოწამე ონოფრე (ერობაში მათე) ბულგარეთის სოფელ გაბროვოში დაიბადა. მან კარგი განათლება მიიღო და ბრწყინვალე მომავალიც ელოდა, მაგრამ ღვთისმოყვარე ჭაბუკმა ათონის მთას მიაშურა და ხილენდარის მონასტერში მანასეს სახელით აღიკვეცა ბერად. თურმე ერთხელ, ბავშვობაში, მამას მათე ანცობისათვის დაუსჯია და გაბრაზებულ ბავშვს უაზროდ დაუყვირნია: „გავთურქდები!” ქრისტიანობის ამ უნებლიე, სიტყვიერი გმობის გამო სინანულმა მიიყვანა იგი წმიდა მთაზე, მაგრამ ათონელ ბერთა ცხოვრების მკაცრმა წესმაც ვერ დააკმაყოფილა, ქრისტესათვის წამების სურვილი აღეძრა და თავისი გულისნადები გამოცდილ მოძღვარს, ნიკიფორეს გაუმხილა. ნიკიფორემ სქემით შემოსა მოშურნე ბერი, ონოფრე უწოდა და თურქების კუთვნილ კუნძულ ხიოსზე გაგზავნა, სადაც წმიდანმა გმო ყურანის ცრუ-სიბრძნე და აშკარად აღიარა ქრისტე. ამისთვის იგი შეიპყრეს და სასტიკად აწამეს, შემდეგ კი თავი მოჰკვეთეს და ზღვაში ჩააგდეს.
