წმიდა მოდესტოსი - იერუსალიმელი მთავარეპისკოპოსი კაბადოკიის სებასტიაში (მცირე აზია) დაიბადა, ქრისტიანთა ოჯახში. მან სიყმაწვილიდანვე იგრძნო მისწრაფება მკაცრი, ასკეტური ცხოვრებისკენ და, როცა ჟამმა უწია, ბერად აღიკვეცა. შემდგომში ნეტარი მოდესტოსი წმიდა თეოდოსი დიდის სავანის იღუმენი იყო პალესტინაში. ამ დროს სირიასა და პალესტინას თავს დაესხნენ სპარსელები, ოთხმოცდაათი ათასი ქრისტიანი ამოხოცეს და მართლმადიდებლური ტაძრები დაანგრიეს. მტერმა უფლის ცხოველმყოფელი ჯვარი იგდო ხელთ და მრავალ სხვა ქრისტიანთან ერთად იერუსალიმის პატრიარქი ზაქარიაც დაატყვევა. ამის შემდეგ იერუსალიმის ეკლესიის განმგებლობა დროებით წმიდა მოდესტოსს დაევალა.
