ძველი აღთქმის მიხედვით, მამრობითი სქესის ყველა ჩვილ ბავშვს უნდა წინადაეცვითა, უფლისა მამამთავარი აბრაამისა და მისი შთამომავლობისათვის მიცემული აღთქმის მოსაგონებლად (შეს. 17,10-4; ლევ. 12,3). შობიდან მერვე დღეს წინადაიცვითა უფალმა ჩვენმა იესო ქრისტემაც – თვით სჯულის შემოქმედმა აღასრულა სჯულის მოთხოვნა, რომ ჩვენთვის ღვთაებრივი ნების მორჩილების მაგალითი ეჩვენებინა. უფალმა წინადაიცვითა და ამით ცხადად გვიჩვენა, რომ მან ჭეშმარიტად შეისხა ხორცი და განკაცდა. ამ წესის აღსრულების დროს დაერქვა ქრისტეს სახელი იესო, რომელიც ყოვლადწმიდა ქალწულ მარიამს აუწყა მთავარანგელოზმა გაბრიელმა (ლუკა 1,31-33; 2,21). იესო მაცხოვარს ნიშნავს და მიანიშნებს იმაზე, რომ ქრისტე სამყაროს გამოსახსნელად განკაცდა.
