Philosophe, il s'était fait charbonnier par esprit de mortification. Saint Grégoire le Thaumaturge le choisit comme évêque de Commana (Soukhoumi dans l'actuelle Abkhazie) et c'est là qu'il donna sa vie, martyr pour le Christ.
