Procope naquit à Hotish, aujourd'hui en République Tchèque. Il fut ordonné prêtre et se retira sur une montagne pour vivre sur le modèle des ermites orientaux. Le duc (Herceg) Ulrich le découvrit par hasard, et aida Procope à fonder le monastère de Saint Jean le Précurseur sur la rivière Sazava. Le saint homme mourrut en 1053.
