Originaire de Samosate en Mésopotamie, il était très versé dans les lettres syriaques. Devenu moine, il gagna la Phénicie où il fonda un monastère dans la montagne, au milieu des païens qui vinrent à Jésus-Christ grâce à son exemple et à sa prédication. Puis, il fonda un monastère à Constantinople.
