Hilaire fut un ardent combattant contre l'hérésie d'Arius en Occident. Il souffrit beaucoup du fait de sa défense de l'Orthodoxie. Hilaire écrivit nombre d'ouvrages; sa plus importante thèse fut à propos de la Sainte Trinité. Il mourrut dans le Seigneur en l'an 362.
