Il se fit moine très jeune au Mont-Olympe, en Bythinie, région nord ouest de l'Asie Mineure. Il reçut la grâce de l'impassibilité, "l'apatheia", ayant imprimé en son coeur l'image de Notre Seigneur Jésus-Christ en qui il trouva le repos éternel après avoir défendu le culte des Saintes Images.
