Homme particulièrement versé dans la philosophie hellénistique, il devint Chrétien en ayant lu les Saintes Ecritures, et devint un grand champion de la Foi Chrétienne. Son ouvrage 'Sur la Foi' existe encore de nos jours. Il gouverna l'Eglise d'Antioche durant 13 ans, et entra dans le repos en 181.
