Paphnuce fut disciple de saint Antoine le Grand. Par sa sainteté de vie, Paphnuce convertit nombre de pécheurs, les menant sur le chemin de la repentance, comme sainte Thaïs, qui est commémorée le 8 octobre. Paphnuce ressemblait à un ange incorporel plus qu'à un homme corporel. Il mourrut vers la fin du 4ième siècle.
