Saint Daniel vécut au 10ème siècle. C'était un dignitaire Espagnol, et préfet de l'île de Niverta (Bizerte). Dédaignant la gloire humaine, il devint moine à Rome et partit en pèlerinage vers les lieux saints de Constantinople et Jérusalem, où il fut reçut comme moine du grand schème sous le nom de Stéphane. Il reçut la couronne du martyre pour avoir refusé l'ordre des Sarrazins de renoncer au Christ et de devenir musulman.
