Sfîntul Ierotei a fost însoţitorul Sfîntului Dionisie Areopagitul şi a primit Credinţa Creştină de la Sfîntul Apostol Pavel, la puţin timp în urma Sfîntului Dionisie. Mai după aceea, Sfîntul Apostol Pavel 1-a uns pe Ierotei Episcop al Atenei. La vremea Sfintei Adormiri a Maicii Domnului, Sfîntul Ierotei a sosit la Ierusalim şi a fost de faţă la înmormîntarea ei. Cu dumnezeiescul lui dar de cîntăreţ el a inspirat în multe suflete dreapta închinare, arătîndu-se bărbat insuflat de sus. El s-a nevoit mult întru slujirea Cuvîntului, aducînd pre mulţi păgîni la lumina Adevărului şi bine păstorind turma cea cuvîntătoare a lui Hristos. El a luat la sfîrşit moarte de mucenic al lui Hristos, al Celuia Care i-a dăruit îndoita cunună a Cereştii Lui împărăţii: cea de Ierarh şi cea de mucenic.
