Acest sfînt proroc a trăit cu mai bine de opt sute de ani înainte de Hristos. Sfînta Tradiţie zice că el a fost fiul văduvei din Sarepta Sidonului, pe care Prorocul Ilie 1-a înviat din morţi. Prin aceea că a fost înghiţit de o balenă uriaşă [un chit] în al cărei pîntece a stat trei zile şi trei nopţi, el a închipuit cele trei zile pe care le-a stat Mîntuitorul Hristos în mormînt; şi, prin ieşirea lui din pîntecele chitului, el a închipuit învierea Domnului nostru Hristos din morţi. Toate cele privitoare la acest minunat proroc al lui Dumnezeu se află scrise în Cartea prorocului lonâ din Sfînta Scriptură a Vechiului Testament.
