Avîndu-i în fruntea lor pe Urban, Theodor şi Medimn, aceşti bărbaţi, în vremea persecuţiilor împotriva Ortodoxiei declanşate de împăratul Valens, au fost aleşi dintre cei mai distinşi şi mai respectaţi creştini ai Capitalei constantinopolitane şi însărcinaţi să meargă la Nicomidia spre a îl implora pe împăratul cel eretic (care era arian) ca cel puţin să nu îi ucidă pe ortodocşii întemniţaţi, împăratul a turbat de furie văzîndu-i şi le-a spus să se întoarcă la casele lor, dar în taină le-a poruncit corăbierilor să dea foc corăbiei cînd va ajunge în larg, iar ei să scape cu bărcile de salvare.
