Sfintul Teognost a fost Mitropolit al Kievului. El era grec de neam si i-a urmat în scaun Sfintului Petru de Kiev. El a suferit mult de pe urma hoardelor mongole, mai ales din cauza sîngerosului Janibeg Han. Acest Sfint Teognost a fost batjocorit chiar si de pastoritii lui rusi, si chiar înaintea capeteniei mongole, pentru ca a refuzat sa-si plateasca cu bani demnitatea lui episcopala. Cînd capetenia mongola 1-a chemat si 1-a chestionat cu privire la aceasta, Sfîntul Teognost a raspus: „Hristos Dumnezeu a izbavit aceasta Biserica a Lui de pagînatate cu Scump Sîngele Sau. Cum dar si dupa care lege ar trebui eu pentru aceasta sa platesc tribut paginilor?!", în cele din urma a fost eliberat, si s-a întors la turma sa, pe care a pastorit-o timp de douazeci si cinci de ani. Sfîntul Tegnost a trecut la locasurile cele ceresti la anul 1353 dupa Hristos.
