Sfîntul Modest a fost prunc în vîrsta de cinci luni cînd au murit parintii lui, dar prin purtarea de grija a lui Dumnezeu el a fost crescut întru toata evlavia crestina. Ajungînd în vîrsta, el a fost vîndut ca sclav unui pagîn din Egipt. Cu toate acestea, el a izbutit sa îl converteasca pe stapînul lui la Credinta Crestina, iar stapînul lui 1-a eliberat. Sfîntul Modest atunci s-a retras la Muntele Sinai, unde s-a nevoit aspru pîna la vîrsta de cincizeci si noua de ani. Ajungînd la acea vîrsta, el a fost înaltat Patriarh al Ierusalimului, pastorind cu frica si cu cutremur turma lui Hristos cea încredintata lui. El s-a savîrsit cu pace la anul 633, în vîrsta fiind de nouazeci si sapte de ani.
