Sfîntul Stamatie a fost taran nascut în satul Voios, din Thessalia. Cînd în partea locului a venit un aga ticalos care a început sa strînga birurile taranilor cu multa salbaticie si multe faradelegi, taranul Stamatie, împreuna cu alti barbati, au pornit-o catre Constantinopol sa se plînga marelui vizir. Prin criticile taioase pe care Sfîntul Stamatie le-a adus cu dreptate împotriva ticalosului aga, el i-a ofensat pe cei din anturajul vizirului, ceea ce a dus la arestarea lui. Mai întîi ei au încercat sa- 1 faca sa treaca la Islam cu ademeniri si cu lingusiri, promitîndu-i bogatie, cinste si onoruri. El însa le-a strigat în fata: „Hristos este cinstea, bogatia si onoarea mea!" Turcii 1-au torturat bestial, iar la urma i-au taiat capul înaintea portilor Bisericii Sfintei Sofia. Asa s-a încununat cu cununa vesnicei slave acest viteaz ostean al lui Hristos, la anul 1680.
