Sfîntul Marcellus a fost din Insula Cipru, nascut din parinti foarte bogati si slaviti. El însusi a primit în Cipru, patria lui, cea mai înalta educatie, avînd o minte foarte ascutita si fiind eminent dotat pentru studiu. Sfîntul Marcellus a fost barbat casatorit si a avut copii. Dupa ce a murit sotia lui, Sfîntul Marcellus s-a retras în Siria, îmbratisînd viata monahala, si lasîndu-i pe copiii sai în Purtarea de Grija a lui Dumnezeu. El s-a facut vestit pentru milostivirea, blîndetea, si marea lui învatatura duhovniceasca. Locuitorii cetatii Apamia 1-au ales pentru aceasta sa le fie lor episcop. Episcopul Marcellus s-a nevoit cu rîvna întru întoarcerea la Hristos a paginilor ce se aflau în acea cetate. S-a întîmplat atunci arderea unei capisti pagînesti, iar pagînii 1-au acuzat pe Episcopul Marcellus, zicînd ca el a pus acel foc. Ei 1-au ars de viu cam pe la anul 389.
