Acest sfînt Stefan a fost Papa al Romei între anii 253 si 257 dupa Hristos, pe cînd împarat al Apusului era Valerian. Sfîntul Papa Stefan a luptat aprig împotriva ereticului Novatian. Sfîntul Papa Stefan a vindecat-o pe Lucilla, fiica tribunului Nemesius, si i-a botezat pe amîndoi, tata si fiica. Sfîntul Papa Stefan a fost decapitat, împreuna cu doisprezece preoti ai sai, în timpul slujirii Sfintei Litrughii.
