Sfînta Mucenita Marchella este foarte cinstita de poporul locuitor al Insulei Chios. In biserica din aceasta insula care poarta hramul ei au loc minuni în fiecare an. Cu toate acestea, viata ei nu este cunoscuta. Potrivit traditiei, Marchella a fost o copila foarte cucernica care a ramas orfana de mama la o vîrsta foarte mica. Bestialul si pagînul ei tata a vrut sa-si necinsteasca propria fiica, si sa traiasca cu ea ca si cu o sotie. Marchella a scapat din mîinile bestialului pagîn dar el, fugind, a prins-o si a taiat-o în bucati, în apropiere de biserica închinata ei se afla niste pietre care, din timp în timp, se fac ca si cînd ar fi stropite cu sînge.
