Sfantul Ioan Scararul a vietuit intre anii 578-649. A intrat in cinul monahal la varsta de 16 ani. Sfantul Ioan Scararul l-a avut ca povatuitor pe Cuviosul Macarie, timp de 19 ani. Dupa moartea parintelui sau duhovnicesc, Sfantul Ioan Scararul s-a retras intr-o pestera, unde a dus o viata aspra vreme de 40 de ani. A fost vreme indelungata egumen al manastirii din Muntele Sinai. El este autorul lucrarii "Scara”, carte care ne descrie viata duhovniceasca sub forma unei scari cu 30 de trepte care ne duce spre Dumnezeu. "Scara” a fost tradusa in limba romana de parintele Dumitru Staniloae si se afla cuprinsa in volumul al IX-lea al Filocaliei.
