Teodor era cetatean al Constantinopolelui si fiu al unor parinti ce apartineau aristocratiei capitalei imperiale. El a parasit de tînar casa parintilor sai cu toate bogatiile ei si a intrat într-o mînastire eremitica din Tracia. El dormea pe pietre spre a-si scurta somnul. El calatorea pretutindeni cu capul desoperit si îsi acoperea trupul cu un singur vesmînt aspru facut din par de capra, din care pricina s-a si numit „Trihina." Din cauza marilor sale nevointe ascetice facute din dorirea mîntuirii sufletului, Dumnezeu i-a daruit marele har al facerii de minuni, atît în timpul vietii, cît si dupa moarte. El a adormit cu pace cam pe la anul 400. Trupul sau a fost aflat izvorîtor de mir.
