Cuviosul Agatanghel era din Tracia. Numele lui din lume fusese Atanasie. Fiind rob la turci, el a fost trecut cu forta la Islam, în orasul Smirna. Pentru pocainta, el s-a tuns monah în Sfîntul Munte Athos, la Mînastirea Esfigmenu. Chinuit în continuare de constiinta sa, el a dorit sa-si spele pacatul turcirii cu propriul lui sînge. El a plecat la Smirna, unde s-a aratat înaintea turcilor, purtînd o cruce si o icoana a Rastignirii lui Hristos. El a fost omorît prin taierea capului, în ziua de 19 aprilie a anului 1819, pe cînd era în vîrsta de nouasprezece ani. Dupa moartea lui, el a aparut viu înaintea lui Ghermano, parintele lui duhovnicesc din Sfîntul Munte.
