Cuviosul Ioan inca de tanar a urmat calea monahala fiind ucenic al Sfantului Grigorie Decapolitul. In timpul iconoclasmului, acestia umbland prin cetate, ii intareau pe crestini in dreapta credinta, pentru a nu cadea in erezie. Din acest motiv imparatul Leon Armeanul i-a supus la numeroase torturi. Dupa moartea Sfantului Grigorie Decapolitul, Cuviosul loan a devenit staret al Manastirii Decapole din Constantinopol. Sfantul Cuvios Ioan, s-a mutat la Domnul la anul 820. Cuviosul losif, Scriitorul de Cantari, l-a ingropat cu cinste langa mormantul Sfantului Grigorie.
