Sfantul Zaharia a fost fiul lui Carion egipteanul. El si-a lasat copii si nevasta si s-a facut monah. Desi Zaharia era mai tanar decat cei mai multi frati de la Schit, el era plin de darurile Duhului Sfant, mai mult decat cei mai varstnici. El isi simtea intreaga fiinta inflacarata de dragostea Harului lui Dumnezeu. L-a intrebat Sfantul Macarie: "Cine este adevarat monah?" Sfantul Zaharia a raspuns: "Acela care se lupta zilnic sa implineasca Poruncile Dumnezeiesti." L-a intrebat Avva Moise: "Ce inseamna sa fii monah?" iar Sfantul Zaharia a raspuns, scotandu-si camilafca si calcand-o in picioare: "Aceasta inseamna sa fii monah. Nimeni nu poate fi monah care nu se lasa zdrobit ca aceasta camilafca." El a fost un mare luminator al pustiei egiptene, care a trecut la cele vesnice de tanar.
