Acest cuvios parinte al nostru si facator de minuni Agaton era din Italia, fiu de parinti crestini, cucernici si bine cinstitori, care, ostenindu-se, l-au invatat toata Scriptura cea de Dumnezeu insuflata si folositoare. Caci atat de mult s-a folosit si s-a umilit, incat, dupa ce au murit parintii sai, a adunat toata bogatia lor si chemand odata pe saraci le-a impartit-o pe toata si s-a dus la o manastire, unde s-a facut monah. Si imbracandu-se in chipul ingeresc, slujea lui Dumnezeu ziua si noaptea, facand rugaciuni pentru lume. Si se nevoia atat de mult spre fapta buna, iar fapta buna nu se ascunde, a ajuns papa al Romei. Si bine impodobind aceasta vrednicie, in pace s-a mutat catre Domnul.
