La ceasul naşterii lui casa în care s-a născut s-a umlut de lumină cerească. Mai apoi Lazăr şi-a părăsit satul lui din Magnesia şi a mers la Ierusalim, să cerceteze Locurile Sfinte, spre mîntuirea sufletului lui. Acolo el a fost tuns monah în Mînăstirea Sfîntului Sava cel Sfinţit. După zece ani de nevoinţe în acea sfîntă mînăstire, Preacuviosul Lazăr a mers şi s-a sălăşluit, în urma unei vedenii dumnezeieşti, la Muntele Galisiului [în apropiere de Efes], unde s-a nevoit pînă la moarte întru aspre nevoinţe călugăreşi, ca stîlpnic. Sfîntul Preacuvios Lazăr a fost mare făcător de minuni, şi în timpul vieţii, şi după fericita lui adormire, împăratul Constantin Monomahul avea o adîncă evlavie faţă de acest mare nevoitor. Ajungînd la vîrsta bătrîneţilor, Sfîntul Precuvios Lazăr s-a săvîrşit către Domnul, la finele veacului al unsprezecelea.
