La anul 740, în timpul domniei împăratului Leon Isaurul, Constantinopolul a fost zguduit de un cutremur foarte lung şi înfricoşat. Poporul a socotit că aceasta este pedeapsa lui Dumnezeu pentru păcatele lor, şi s-a rugat cu lacrimi la Icoana Preasfintei Născătoare de Dumnezeu [din Vlaherne] şi la Sfîntului Dimitrie, pînă cînd, prin mila lui Dumnezeu, a încetat cumplitul cutremur.
