Sfînta Thavita (al cărei nume în tălmăcire însemnează "gazelă", "căprioară") a fost uceniţa Sfinţilor Apostoli şi a locuit în cetatea lope. Ea era plină de fapte bune şi de milosteniile pe care le făcea (Fapte 9: 36). Pe neaşteptate însă ea s-a îmbolnăvit şi a murit. Sfîntul Apostol Petru se afla atunci în cetatea Lydda, şi acolo au trimis după el ucenicii lui îndureraţi, rugîndu-1 cu lacrimi să vină la lope şi să îi mîngîie pe părinţii şi rudeniile Thavitei, care erau zdrobite de durere. Sosind la lope, marele Apostol al lui Hristos a cerut tuturor să iasă din încăperea în care se afla trupul neînsufleţit al Thavitei, şi a îngenuncheat la rugăciune înaintea lui Dumnezeu. Apoi, întorcîndu-se care trup, a zis: Tavita, scoală-te! (Fapte 9: 40), iar ea şi-a deschis ochii şi, văzînd pe Petru, a şezut (Fapte 9: 40). Făcîndu-se cunoscută fapta aceasta în întreaga cetate a lopei, mulţi au crezut în Domnul şi Mîntuitorul lisus Hristos.
