Theofil a fost de neam slav, şi se trăgea din Macedonia, de pe lîngă locul numit Strumiţa. El s-a tuns monah din fragedă copilărie, iar după oarece vreme şi-a întemeiat propria mînăstire. El a luat suferinţe de la nelegiuitul împărat iconoclast Leon Isaurul, şi ar fi murit în torturi, dacă nu ar fi reuşit să îl convingă pe judecătorul Hypaticus de adevărul cinstirii sfintelor icoane. Convingîndu-se că cinstirea sfintelor icoane înseamnă cinstirea adevărului, Guvernatorul Hypaticus 1-a eliberat pe Sfîntul Theofil. Astfel Sfîntul s-a întors la mînăstirea lui şi a trecut la puţin timp după aceea la locaşurile bucuriei celei cereşti, anul fiind 716.
